Description
This is an authentic 1917 German 10 Pfennig official necessity coin (Notgeld) issued by the University City of Tübingen in the Kingdom of Württemberg during World War I. The obverse features the traditional coat of arms of Tübingen centered within a pearl circle, displaying crossed arms holding pennants above a shield, surrounded by the German lettering UNIVERSITÄTSSTADT TÜBINGEN. The reverse prominently displays the denomination number 10 in the center, enclosed by a pearl circle and the inscription KLEINGELDERSATZ along with the commemorative year 1917, flanked by small decorative rosettes. As a historic and prominent university town operating under the reign of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg, local authorities commissioned this distinct octagonal emergency coinage to combat the severe national shortages of circulating metal during the war. Minted in zinc by the Stuttgarter Metallwarenfabrik, this eight-sided token features a plain edge, a precise diameter of 20.7 mm, a thickness of 1.14 mm, and a weight of 2.45 grams, cataloged under Funck reference 551.3.
