Description
This authentic 1918 German 10 Pfennig emergency coin (Kriegsgeld) was issued by the city of Balingen in Württemberg during World War I. The obverse features the denomination number 10 prominently in the center, encircled by a beaded rim and the German lettering KRIEGSGELD along with the commemorative year 1918, flanked by two small asterisks. The reverse displays the historic coat of arms of Balingen, characterized by a quartered shield positioned below a stag's antler, surrounded by a beaded rim and the text OBERAMTSSTADT BALINGEN, separated by two asterisks. As an "Oberamtsstadt," Balingen served as a crucial administrative district capital within the Kingdom of Württemberg, issuing this local necessity coinage (Notgeld) in response to severe national metal shortages. Minted in zinc, this round token has a plain edge, a diameter of 20.3 mm, and weighs 1.7 grams, cataloged under Funck# 28.1. Mintage is 40443 pieces only.
