Description
This authentic 1918 German 10 Pfennig emergency coin (Kriegsgeld) was issued by the city of Landsberg an der Warthe in the province of Brandenburg (modern-day Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland) during the final year of World War I. The obverse features the denomination number 10 prominently in the center, enclosed by a beaded circle, with the German lettering MAGISTRAT DER STADT LANDSBERG A. W. inscribed around the rim, signifying the local municipal authority. The reverse also displays the denomination 10 centrally, surrounded by a beaded circle and the text KLEINGELDERSATZ LANDSBERG A/W., officially denoting its status as replacement small change. During the severe national metal shortages of the Great War, the Magistrate of Landsberg an der Warthe minted this local necessity coinage, known as Notgeld, to facilitate daily commerce within the city. Struck in zinc by the mint of Jörgum & Trefz in Frankfurt, this round token features a plain edge, a diameter of 22.5 mm, a weight of 2.5 grams, and a very limited mintage of only 25,000 pieces (cataloged under Funck# 279.1a).
