Description
This is a genuine 1918 German 50 Pfennig emergency coin (Kriegsgeld) issued by the city of Reutlingen in the Kingdom of Württemberg during World War I. The obverse displays the denomination number 50 centrally located, encircled by a beaded rim, the German lettering KRIEGSNOTGELD, and the year 1918, which is flanked by two small asterisks. The reverse features a highly detailed depiction of the Reutlingen regional coat of arms, showing a stag's antler positioned above an eagle, all set against a central shield, surrounded by a beaded rim and the text KREISHAUPTSTADT REUTLINGEN. As a "Kreishauptstadt," Reutlingen served as a vital district capital within Württemberg, and local authorities authorized this necessity coinage, known as Notgeld, to mitigate severe national shortages of circulating metal. Struck in nickel covered zinc by the mint of Jörgum & Trefz in Frankfurt, this round token features a plain edge, a diameter of 23 mm, and a weight of 3 grams, referenced under Funck# 431.1. Mintage is 286 276
