Description

This is a historic 1919 German 50 Pfennig emergency coin (Kleingeldersatzmarke) issued by the city of Arnsberg in Westphalia during the Weimar Republic period. The obverse features the Arnsberg coat of arms, a crowned eagle centered on a horizontally ribbed shield, surrounded by a beaded rim and the German lettering STADT ARNSBERG (WESTF.) 1919. The reverse displays the denomination number 50 centrally located, encircled by the text KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE and a star at the bottom, also enclosed by a beaded rim. Following World War I, severe metal shortages in Germany led local municipalities, like the historical town of Arnsberg, to issue this type of emergency necessity coinage, known as Notgeld, to facilitate daily trade. Arnsberg, situated in the North Rhine-Westphalia region, served as an important administrative center during this turbulent post-war economic era. The dimensions of this iron coin are 23.4 mm in diameter and it has a weight of 3.21 grams.
