Description
This commemorative medal, minted in 1983, marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), known as El Libertador — a central figure in the independence movements of several South American nations. The piece was issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Venezuela in the People's Republic of Bulgaria, highlighting Bolívar’s legacy beyond Latin America and its symbolic resonance during the Cold War era.
The obverse of the medal features a bust of Simón Bolívar facing right, with unreadable markings beneath the portrait. Around the edge, the full inscription reads:
“1783 BICENTENARIO DEL NACIMIENTO DEL LIBERTADOR SIMON BOLIVAR 1983”, commemorating the bicentenary of Bolívar’s birth.
The reverse consists entirely of lettering, honoring Bolívar’s pan-American vision. The bilingual inscription reads:
“EMBAJADA DE LA REPUBLICA DE VENEZUELA EN LA REPUBLICA POPULAR DE BULGARIA PARA NOSOSTROS LA PATRIA ES AMERICA ЗА НАС РОДИНА Е АМЕРИКА”
which translates to "For us, the homeland is America", a famous Bolívar quote reaffirming unity among the peoples of the Americas.
This piece belongs to diplomatic and ideological exonumia, connecting Venezuelan national identity with international solidarity. It is of particular interest to collectors of Latin American history medals, Cold War commemoratives, and Venezuelan foreign-issued numismatics.
