Description
This undated commemorative token marks the 700th anniversary of the Riddagshausen Monastery, located near Braunschweig, Germany. The obverse features a detailed view of the Riddagshausen Monastery and its surrounding nature, a symbol of the site's dual historical and ecological importance. The full inscription on the obverse reads: “100 JAHRE KLOSTER RIDDAGSHAUSEN”, commemorating a century milestone in the modern preservation of the site.
The reverse is uniface, meaning there is no design or lettering on the reverse side. Founded in 1145 by Cistercian monks, the Riddagshausen Monastery played a key role in the spiritual and agricultural life of the region. It later became a Lutheran seminary and is now part of a nature reserve and heritage complex, combining religious, architectural, and environmental history. This token is a notable example of local German exonumia tied to heritage conservation and monastic commemoration.
