Description
This commemorative token, undated, pays tribute to the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers, specifically the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments of the United States Army. The obverse of the token features a stylised watch tower, representing frontier defence, and bears the full inscription: “DEFENDERS OF THE WEST”.
The reverse presents the image of a mounted cavalry knight, symbolising the historic role of Black soldiers in the American West. The reverse is inscribed: “Buffalo Soldiers 9th CAVALRY 10th”. These regiments were composed of African American soldiers formed in the aftermath of the Civil War and were active in military campaigns across the Western frontier, where they gained distinction for their discipline and resilience.
Although the token is not dated, its design likely originates from the late 20th century, created as a symbolic tribute to the service of the Buffalo Soldiers. This piece belongs to modern exonumia and holds thematic value for collectors interested in American military history, African American heritage, and frontier-era commemoratives.
