Description
This is an authentic German 10 Pfennig zinc internment camp token (Gefangenenlager) issued in the city of Cassel (modern-day Kassel) in the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau. The obverse features the denomination number 10 centrally located within a pearl circle, surrounded by the German lettering GEFANGENENLAGER • CASSEL • and an outer pearl rim. The reverse displays the denomination number 10 positioned prominently above the word PFENNIG, completely encircled by a matching pearl rim. During World War I, the city of Kassel served as a significant military hub and hosted prisoner of war camps where these specific necessity tokens were issued to internees to facilitate internal camp trade and prevent the accumulation of standard circulating currency. Struck in zinc, this historically significant round milled token has a plain edge, a precise diameter of 18.8 mm, a thickness of 0.97 mm, and a weight of 1.51 grams, cataloged under Menzel reference 4265.2.
