Description
This commemorative medal, date of issue unknown, honours Luitpold, Prince Regent of Bavaria (Luitpold Prinz-Regent von Bayern), who held the regency of the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1886 to 1912. He governed on behalf of his nephews King Ludwig II and later King Otto, both declared incapacitated, making Luitpold one of Bavaria’s most influential leaders of the late 19th century. His era was marked by economic growth, cultural prosperity, and architectural development across Munich and Bavaria.
The obverse depicts a laureate bust facing right, framed by a wreath of laurel leaves. The full inscription reads:
“LUITPOLD PRINZ - REGENT V. BAYERN”.
The reverse shows an inscription set within a decorative trilobe and surrounded by ornate flourishes. The lettering states:
“ZUR GUTEN ERINNERUNG”, which translates to "In Good Remembrance", indicating the medal was issued as a commemorative keepsake or presentation piece, possibly marking an anniversary, jubilee, or official visit.
These medals were produced in various materials and sizes, often distributed during public ceremonies or retained as personal mementos. Collectors value them for their connection to Bavarian royal history, the Habsburg dynasty, and the broader landscape of German commemorative exonumia.
