Description
This is a historic 1857 French brass propaganda token issued to commemorate the French victory in Algeria. The obverse features a beaded border enclosing a three-line Arabic inscription, which translates to "Sultan Mahmud Khan, May he be victorious". The reverse also displays a beaded border, but encircles what is classified as pseudo-Arabic lettering, typical of European-produced tokens aiming for an Oriental aesthetic without linguistic accuracy. Historically, this exonumia piece was struck to celebrate the successful military expedition led by General Jacques Louis Randon, the Governor of Algeria, who organized a campaign into the Djurdjura region in Kabylia in May 1857, effectively subduing the local resistance by July. Struck in brass with a plain edge, this milled commemorative token has a diameter of 23.66 mm, a thickness of 1.4 mm, and weighs 3.3 grams (cataloged under Lecompte# 41). This specific piece is holed.
