Description
This is an authentic 1917 German 50 Pfennig emergency coin (Kriegsgeld) issued by the city of Quakenbrück in the Artland region of Lower Saxony. The obverse features the denomination number 50 in the center, enclosed by a beaded circle and the German lettering ZAHLSTELLE ARTLÄNDER BANK A.-G., referencing the local Artland Bank which acted as the paying agency. The reverse displays the historic city gate of Quakenbrück, the "Hohe Pforte," characterized by its prominent central building and two flanking towers, surrounded by a beaded circle and the text KRIEGSGELD DER STADT QUAKENBRÜCK along with the year 1917. Quakenbrück was a significant Hanseatic trading center, and during the severe national metal shortages of World War I, local authorities commissioned this distinct eight-sided necessity coinage to sustain the local economy. Struck in iron, this octagonal token has a plain edge, a diameter of 24.3 mm, and weighs 2.8 grams. Only 20000 pieces ever minted.
