Description

This is a genuine 1918 German 10 Pfennig official necessity coin (Notgeld), issued by the District of Welzheim (Amtskörperschaft Welzheim) in the Federal state of Württemberg during the later years of World War I. The obverse displays a beautifully detailed, centrally positioned fir tree surrounded by a pearl circle, with the German lettering AMTSKÖRPERSCHAFT ✶ WELZHEIM ✶ encircling the rim, representing the deep forested nature of the Welzheim Forest region. The reverse features the denomination number 10 above the letters PF. (Pfennig) enclosed in a pearl circle, surrounded by the inscription KRIEGSMÜNZE (war coin) and the commemorative year 1918. Struck to combat the national shortage of circulating small change during wartime, this local emergency currency served the everyday trade needs of the Welzheim district. Minted in iron by Stuttgarter Metallwarenfabrik Wilhelm Mayer & Franz Wilhelm, this round token has a plain edge, a diameter of 21.1 mm, a thickness of 1.4 mm, and a weight of 3.4 grams. This specific issue is cataloged under Funck reference 593.2 and has a limited total mintage of 116,200 pieces.  The piece on the picture is not scratched, it seems so, because of the clearance of the picture, but in hand, in fact, it is almost UNC.
